Queen Elizabeth II’s reign is being commemorated by The Royal Canadian Mint on the toonie.
A commemorative $2 coin featuring the late monarch and accented with a black outer ring is coming into circulation. The black ring itself is meant to signify mourning and surrounds both the queen and the polar bear marking the other side.
In its release, the Mint stresses the importance of paying homage to an integral figure in Canadian history.
“She was a constant presence in the lives of Canadians, who will forever remember her unwavering dedication to public service and deep affection for Canada.”
The Mint mourned her loss on a coin commemorating all four of her traditional effigies after her death in September.
Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Sept. 8 and was succeeded by her son, King Charles III. Coins with an effigy portraying King Charles are already circulating in Great Britain. The Royal Canadian Mint has yet to announce plans to do anything similar.
It has previously said that as new coins are produced, it will be up to the Government of Canada to decide whether to change the image on the obverse (heads side) of coins, where the Queen currently appears.
