Food banks across the country began reporting a steep increase in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many already struggling against the huge drop in donations being made. Guru Nanak Food Bank opened in Surrey B.C. on Canada Day to fill that need, run by local members of the Sikh community.
OMNI Television’s Gautam Arora spoke with founder Jatinder Minhas about the importance of setting up an accessible support for the South Asian community that caters to their unique cultural needs. With many dietary restrictions and specific ingredients needed to make traditional dishes, Guru Nanak fills the gap that many of the bigger Foodbanks can’t fill. Jatinder said he wanted to make sure those in the community struggling during the pandemic wouldn’t have to abandon their Sikh heritage to survive.
