OMNI Punjabi Year in Review: Profile of South Asian activist Harsha Walia

X

Social justice movements fighting for the human rights of disenfranchised communities were trending around the world in 2020. OMNI Television’s Prabhjot Kahlon profiled Harsha Walia, long-time activist, writer, lawyer and the first immigrant and female Executive Director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. Walia also co-founded ‘No-one is Illegal’, a national grassroots justice group that provides legal support for refugees and migrants facing deportation.
As an advocate for immigrants and minority groups, Walia strives to bring important issues in front of government officials who she said often times side-step targeted points brought forward by people who don’t know the right questions to ask. Walia said it’s important for people in the South Asian community and other minorities to see her fighting for their rights, to know that their needs are important and that they have just as much right as anyone else to advocate for their wants. Her new book Border and rule: Global migration, capitalism and the rise of racist nationalism is set to be released in February 2021.
