Newcomers struggle with high housing costs in Canada, study finds

X

Affordability and the housing crisis remain pressing concerns for newcomers to Canada, according to a recent study conducted by IPSOS in collaboration with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

Daniel Bernhard, the CEO of the Institute, shared concerns, stating, “Housing affordability is a huge concern for immigrants who place so much faith in us.”

While most newcomers feel welcomed, the study shows that over 80 per cent are unhappy with how Canada is meeting their expectations, especially regarding affordable housing and job opportunities.

The federal government has introduced measures to address the housing issue, but Bernhard points out that these changes are affecting newcomers, putting them in a difficult position.

“It seems to be fashionable in Canada right now to blame immigrants … our challenges will only get much worse,” warned Bernhard in response to the trend.

In October, the Institute reported that many recent immigrants are leaving Canada due to these challenges. A poll by OMNI News also highlighted issues, such as the rising cost of living, faced by new Canadians.

Bernhard emphasized, “It’s important to confirm our findings so that Canada will begin to understand that this is true.”

As Ottawa grapples with the housing crisis, the study stresses the need for solutions that will specifically help newcomers in the country.
