A candlelight vigil was held Saturday evening for an elderly couple in Caledon. Family, friends and members of the Punjabi community came together to mourn the victims of a double homicide last November.
Jagtar Singh and his wife Harbhajan Kaur, both 57, came to Canada on a visitor visa to visit their son and daughter. On the evening on November 20th, bullets came flying into the residence the family was renting, when Singh was shot and killed. His wife, was shot 22 times and later died in hospital. Their daughter, Jaspreet Kaur was severely injured after being shot 13 times and is battling for her life in hospital.
Family friend Sukhwinder Singh, who was present during the time of the shooting, spoke to OMNI News. Singh believes the shooting to be a case of misidentification, deeming the victims were not primary targets.
“This is a failure of police,” says Kaur, who participated in the vigil via video call while in hospital. Kaur shares that police attended the residence four days before the shooting.
In attendance was NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, who also shared his grief with the family and expressed his concern over the increasing crime rates in the greater Toronto area.
As Peel Regional Police continue to investigate, the son and brother of the victims, Gurdit Singh, and local Punjabi community members are pressing authorities for answers behind this vicious attack.
