作為一個移民大國，加拿大有超過460萬人以非官方語言在當地生活。近年來，講廣東話的人數急劇增加。根據2021年的人口普查數據顯示，廣東話已成為全國第三大使用的語言，僅次於普通話和印度旁遮普語。 近年來，溫哥華的廣東話使用者人數急劇增加。許多移民和留學生來到這座城市，發現廣東話在社區中變得越來越重要。 一些中國留學生表示，他們發現許多人都能講普通話，但不太懂廣東話。因此，他們認為學習廣東話對於在溫哥華的生活非常重要，可以幫助他們更好地融入當地社區。 卑詩大學在2015年開辦了廣東話課程，為有興趣學習廣東話的學生提供正規課程。在過去的八年中，參加課程的學生人數持續增長。負責教授廣東話課程的林慧文博士認為，越來越多的學生學習廣東話，目的是為了應對日常生活和升學需求。 這門課程吸引了來自不同背景的學生。有一些學生的母語是普通話，這些國際留學生來自中國等地，對廣東話非常感興趣，希望提高粵語口語交流能力。另一部分學生是加拿大華裔，他們的廣東話能力各不相同，有的能聽懂但不太會說，有的則能說但不太會寫中文。 這樣的多樣性使得課程成為一個充滿活力的學習環境，讓學生有機會互相學習和交流。卑詩大學粵語講師林慧文博士鼓勵學生勇於講廣東話，不必擔心被取笑。
