Lawyers say Nikki Kaur was victim of conspiracy and will sue Brampton for ‘unlawful termination’

CityNews has obtained a letter penned by lawyers for Nikki Kaur that says she will pursue litigation for “unlawful termination” after she was fired from her job as director with the City of Brampton the day after Patrick Brown was re-elected mayor.

In the letter, which also directs the City to preserve any documents related to her firing, Kaur’s lawyers with Massey LLP call her dismissal a “targeted retaliation” that was part of a conspiracy against her involving “senior staff at the City and the Mayor’s Office.”

Brown was declared the winner in the mayor’s race with nearly 60 per cent of the vote on Monday with Kaur placing second with 25.5 per cent of the vote.

Kaur was dismissed on Tuesday and accused Brown of attempting to silence her after she tried to expose alleged wrongdoing and mismanagement at Brampton’s City Hall. None of her allegations have been verified.

“I will not be silenced and will never stop standing up for what is right,” Kaur said on Tuesday. “I have retained legal counsel and will fight this injustice. Any further comment on this matter will be through my lawyers.”

A spokesperson for mayor Brown did not provide comment when reached by CityNews after Kaur’s firing became public Tuesday.

In the letter, her lawyers painted her firing as the “culmination of a long conspiracy among senior City officials to silence her persistent efforts to expose wrongdoing and possible corruption in the City’s administration.”

“This conspiracy included her 2021 dismissal and subsequent reinstatement, and was rooted in her recent mayoral campaign,” read the letter.

The letter adds that Kaur is preparing legal action against the City and will be seeking damages.

It goes on to request that the City “preserve all documents and records, in any format, related to Ms. Kaur’s termination” and notify all employees of that directive.

“The City is required to proactively take steps to ensure that the aforementioned documents are preserved for the purposes of future discovery,” the letter says.
