OMNI Portuguese Year in Review: Local NGO reaches out to kids struggling in Africa amid the pandemic

by Nandika Ravi
A 12-year-old girl named Claudia from Angola(South Africa), was diagnosed with meningitis at a very early age, causing her to be solely dependent on her mother to move around. It became increasingly difficult for Claudia’s mother to carry her on her back to physiotherapy sessions, during the pandemic.
In desperation, Claudia’s mother reached out to a non-profit organization, Hope and Angels, here in Canada. With the help of volunteers and donors, the organization made sure that Claudia received a wheelchair for her physiotherapy appointments. Her mother hopes that one day Claudia will learn to walk again.

“In many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries in Africa, there are thousands of children who have experienced greater distresses in their lives,” said Esperança Baião Alfico, founder of Hope and Angels.
“But having lived through some of the same painful circumstances, I can personally relate to the pangs of anguish in their lives.”
Esperanca and Cidalia Lopes, member of the board of directors of Hope and Angels, recently appeared on OMNI News and were interviewed by Sergio Mourato regarding Claudia’s situation and needs. Here’s the full story.

Mourato felt that this was a strong story as, “it created awareness in our Portuguese speaking community.”
“In a society where we have access to the health care and basic needs of human rights, while unfortunately there are people in low income countries who can’t afford these same needs,’ he said.
“It’s our mission to share and report to our viewers the reality and need of the most vulnerable.”
