Toronto native Richie Mehta is quickly becoming one of Canada’s most promising filmmakers.

After receiving a BA in Art History and Cinema Studies jointly from University of Toronto and Sheridan College, Mehta continued his studies at Sheridan College where he earned a postgraduate diploma in Advanced Television and Film. In addition to his formal training, he has participated in several workshops with the National Film Board, Toronto International Film Festival, and Berlinale.

His debut feature film, Amal, has earned more than 30 international awards, received six Genie Award nominations – including best picture, director, and adapted screenplay – and was named one of the decade’s top Canadian films by Playback Magazine. The film’s remake rights were optioned by producer Oprah Winfrey and Harpo Films, with Mehta penning the screenplay.

Mehta recently completed two feature films as writer and director for release in 2013. Sci-fi drama I’ll Follow You Down chronicles a young scientist’s disappearance and its impact on his family, and stars Hollywood heavyweights Victor Garber (Argo), Gillian Anderson (Hannibal), Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist), and Haley Joel Osment (Pay It Forward). Additionally, Siddharth, a Hindi-language film about a father who travels across India in search of his missing son, features Tannishtha Chatterjee (Brick Lane) and Rajesh Tailang in leading roles, and premiered at the 2013 Venice Film Festival.

Mehta is currently developing his next feature film, which is shooting in India this coming year.
