Living in the Shadow
Sending a plume of radioactive fallout into the atmosphere, the nuclear reactor failure at Chornobyl spurred an explosion with an intensity 400 times greater than what was released in the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, during the Second World War. Apart from the devastating environmental impact, the social impact was felt around the globe, particularly in the Ukrainian Diaspora. In Living in the Shadow, filmmaker James Motluk tells the story of Ukrainian Canadians Lu Taskey and Jerry Shudrak who, frustrated by the tight-lipped and underactive Soviet Government, began a mission sending aid to Ukrainian victims affected by the disaster.Through interviews with Raskey, Shudrak and other contributors – the documentary reveals how their small relief effort has grown into a multimillion-dollar charity, the Children of Chornobyl Canadian Fund (CCCF).
