ROM REDUX Japan: Tea and Ceremony At the grand opening of the ROM’s newly designed Prince Takamado Gallery of Japan, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado served as the guest of honour She, along with a great deal of the evening’s guests, spent time lingering in front of a simple and delicately arranged tea ceremony exhibit that speaks much about Japanese culture. In Japan: Tea and Ceremony, we showcase some of the gallery’s striking collection that has attracted the attention of cultural figures from Japan and the West. Most of all we give viewers insight into the beauty and serenity at the heart of a culture that has long been a source of wonder, as we present an authentic tea ceremony with all its hidden drama and deceptively samurai associations, and tell the story of Yamagami Soju—one of Japan’s legendary Grand Tea Masters—and his family, who now live in Toronto and donated the exhibit’s classic utensils.
