A Linc In Time
Despite the turbulent political climate of the civil rights movement in the United States – turbulence that certainly affected and influenced the Canadian political terrain – new opportunities permitted black people to reach high levels of public life. In 1968, Alexander was one of those pioneers, entering into politics and becoming the first African-Canadian Member of Parliament. Since that remarkable feat, he has never looked back: he served from 1965-1980 as a member of the conservative party and has since been at the forefront of promoting social equality.
Inspired by his nickname, “Linc”, the film will ‘linc’ Alexander’s key life moments in order to paint a complete portrait of the man. A Linc in Time shows how Alexander’s defining early years led him to his groundbreaking career in Canadian politics and beyond. His path eventually led him to the post of Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, a position which he was the first visible minority to hold.
Alexander has led an exemplary life that has broken many barriers for minorities and helped alter the face and profile of Canadian politics. The film in turn rallies viewers to not only learn from his life, but also call to attention his dynamic role in Canada’s multiculturalism, demonstrating his enduring importance to our nation, and to African-Canadian history.
Personal memoirs recounted by the man himself are interwoven with interviews from friends and colleagues. With no subject off limits, the film explores Alexander’s childhood, political and academic careers, experiences with racism and personal life. Throughout, Linc proves that his trademark wit and humour are still intact. The resulting portrait is complex and sometimes heartbreaking, but always inspiring.
In addition, archival footage, photographs and small dramatic vignettes demonstrate and chronicle the remarkable series of historical events in the civil rights movement that parallel the events that led to Alexander becoming one of the most groundbreaking and influential leaders in Canadian history.
Much like the American Freedom Riders, Alexander has overcome obstacles, been a fearless advocate and selflessly devoted himself to promoting education, equality and fairness. Documenting this man’s life and dynamic career, which spans more than 60 years, will undeniably provide a great gift to Canada. His is truly a life well lived and a story worth telling.
