Rutabaga & Kale Pie
- 2 tbsp + (25 mL +) -- Butter
- 1 lb (500 g) -- Kale, trimmed and chopped
- 2 tbsp (25 mL) -- Flour
- 1 ¼ cup (325 mL) -- Milk
- ½ cup (125 mL) -- Grated gruyere cheese
- ½ cup (125 mL) -- Grated parmesan cheese
- pinch (pinch) -- Sea salt & fresh ground pepper
- 2 tbsp (25 mL) -- Olive oil
- 4-5 (4-5) -- Cloves of garlic, sliced
- 1 -- Large head of rutabaga, peeled & sliced
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and butter a baking dish. Toss kale into boiling water and cook for four or five minutes. Drain thoroughly, pressing to make sure the excess water has drained. Make sauce: melt butter in a pan over low heat, stir in the flour to make roux, then add the milk and stir until smooth and thick. Add the cheeses. Season and mix sauce with kale. Pour this mixture into the buttered baking dish. Heat olive oil with garlic in a frying pan. Add sliced rutabaga and fry for a few minutes until it turns golden. Arrange the slices over the kale and bake for 20 minutes.
