Salt levels in fast foods higher in Canada

Canadians are eating some of the saltiest fast foods on the planet, new international research shows.

The study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal compared the same menu items from McDonald's, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and other major chains around the world

Researchers found that salt levels in Canada and the U.S. were consistently higher than those in other participating countries, including France, Australia and the U.K.

Across a range of categories, the Canadian version of the menu item featured either the highest or second-highest sodium levels of the countries included in the study. For instance, researchers say McDonald's Chicken McNuggets in Canada were found to contain two-and-a-half times the amount of sodium of their counterparts in the U.K.

Cutting the salt

While most consumed sodium comes from common restaurant or grocery store items, Health Canada offers lots of great tips you can use to better manage your daily salt intake..
