THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT H1N1 INFLUENZA, OR SWINE FLU
The H1N1 flu virus is continuing to spread across Canada. Here are some useful facts to keep you informed about the illness and its symptoms.
- It is a respiratory disease normally found in pigs, but can also be found in humans
- It is contagious
- It can be contracted through human-to-pig contact or human-to-human contact
- You can acquire H1N1 if you are within another person’s breathing zone, about three to six feet
- It is not contracted through the consumption of pork products, provided the meat is handled and prepared properly and cooked at a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius or higher
- The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against H1N1
- Symptoms include: coughing, fever, lethargy and a lack of appetite
- Some people with H1N1 have also reported such symptoms as runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
If you suspect you have contracted H1N1 Influenza, experts suggest you contact your doctor and follow their instructions before showing up at their office.
