In 1982, one of the most important documents in Canadian history was born. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides the framework for the free and democratic society we enjoy today. Now in its third decade of existence, can the document withstand the pressures of technology, issues of privacy and the international demands of the 21st century?
Executive produced by Barbara Jones and directed by Ian Thompson, both of SailorJones Media, Fundamental Freedoms examines the history of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the struggle surrounding the ratification of the document and the importance of the Charter in today’s multicultural society.
In addition to historical footage featuring former Canadian Prime Ministers Pierre E. Trudeau and Jean Chrétien, and astronaut Marc Garneau, interview subjects for Fundamental Freedoms include:
- Sheila Copps, Former Canadian Heritage Minister;
- Avvy Go, Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic;
- The Honourable Roy R. McMurtry, Chief Justice Supreme Court of Ontario;
- T. Sher Singh, Lawyer and Journalist.
From the cultural make up of the team to the programme content itself, Fundamental Freedoms reflects the diversity of Canada; it was awarded Best Documentary by the Canadian Ethnic Media Association in 2006. Fundamental Freedoms is available in Chinese, Cree, English, French, German, Inuktitut, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish – as well as Punjabi.
To discover how an illiterate fisherman from a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic overcame danger, hardship and bigotry to play an important role in Canadian ethnocultural history, tune into Portuguese Joe: The Forgotten Pioneer on OMNI.1, Saturday, June 7th at 10:00 p.m. English language version coming soon.
Fundamental Freedoms was exclusively funded through OMNI's Independent Producers Initiative, a $32.5 million independent production fund that to date has supported over 200 new documentary programmes.
